Eating healthy doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Here are 10 tips to help you stretch your grocery budget.

Every time you walk into the grocery store these days, you find that the price of groceries seems to have gone up again. With costs soaring and budgets staying the same, the need to reduce spending is a necessity for many people.

Eating healthy doesn't have to cost a lot of money. There are ways from AGRILINKS to get your daily nutrition without sacrificing all your hard-earned money.

1 Plan your meals

When people want to eat healthy and save money at the same time, the first piece of advice I give them is to create a meal plan. Even if all you plan is your dinner, you'll find that it can really make a difference. Knowing what you'll eat can reduce last-minute trips to the grocery store, time spent searching for food in the fridge or pantry, and the cost of eating out.

2 Frozen Fruits and Vegetables

Frozen fruits and vegetables are often overlooked because people think they are less nutritious than fresh produce. This is simply not true. Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutritional content as fresh ones because they are picked at their peak ripeness and are either flash-frozen or canned to preserve their nutritional value.

For optimal nutrition, look for frozen products with no added sugar or sauces. You can also choose unsweetened canned fruits packed in 100% juice and choose unsalted canned vegetables of all kinds.

3 Cook at home

Going out to eat night after night is expensive and can really add to your food budget. Cooking from scratch or semi scratch at home is a proven way to help cut costs. For example, a restaurant meal of herb-grilled salmon may cost $20 or more, while the same meal at home using frozen wild-caught salmon from Costco costs about $7.50.

4 Shop seasonally

Fruits and vegetables are staples of a healthy diet, but the cost of fresh produce can add up if you don't know how you're shopping. Seasonal produce is often on sale, so when something is in season, add it to your cart. March is a good month for produce because you still have some winter produce in season, but spring produce is also starting to come into season. Asparagus, Brussels sprouts, spinach, peas, radishes, cauliflower, cabbage and more will be available in March.

5 Buy in bulk

If you can afford to buy more than one at a time and have space in your home, the cost per unit is usually lower when buying larger packages. This can also cut down on trips to the grocery store because you have more food on hand to last you longer. Foods such as rice, beans, oats and pasta have a longer shelf life. Meat, seafood and poultry, when sold or bought in bulk, can be frozen and used later.

6 Grow your own produce

Growing a garden full of fresh produce is not only cost effective, but it also feels good to know where your food comes from and how it is grown. While lots of land certainly helps to grow a garden, it's not necessary. Small spaces can be used to grow a garden by choosing plants wisely, planting in containers, using vertical gardening, and planting continuously rather than all at once.
